The iconic teen romantic comedy classic, Clueless, marks its 30th anniversary this weekend since its original release. This beloved film, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, features Alicia Silverstone in the unforgettable role of Cher Horowitz, captivating audiences with its witty humor and timeless fashion.

There are numerous iconic scenes and lines that the queer community cherishes, but one moment distinctly stands out as a significant historical piece and serves as a vital lesson for those who were not connected to the LGBTQ+ community at the time.

Three characters in a convertible car, with a focus on their expressions: a man in a cap showing concern, a woman in the middle looking confused, and another woman with braids expressing frustration.

Your boy Christian’ A cake boy.

As a hilarious scene that I did not realize as a very young closeted gay, the numerous times I watched it taught me about LGBTQ coding. Your boy Christian embodies the perfect cake boy; he’s a disco dancing, an Oscar Wilde reading, Streisand ticket holder, friend of Dorothy—essentially, he’s GAY. The lines delivered flawlessly by Murray, played by Donald Faison, towards Cher and Dionne were truly groundbreaking at the time, yet subtle enough not to raise alarm.
